Living Awake in a World Asleep

News + New Good Things from Tia Norman

Peaceful, Centered + Connected

The past two months have taken me from mountaintops to marathon routes, conference rooms to moments of deep inner stillness. In March, I spent five days in silence at the Garrison Institute in New York, learning from Cynthia Bourgeault and David Frenette. I flew home just long enough to trade my winter layers for running shoes, then headed to Los Angeles and ran my first marathon.

April brought me to Montana for a retreat with fellow contemplative community creators. A quick stop at home, another suitcase shuffle, and I was off to Atlanta for a gathering of women with an entrepreneurial spirit.

All these places—each wildly different—offered me the same invitation: to stay awake.

The silence of New York, the heartbeat of LA’s streets, the clarity of Montana air, and the charged spaces of Atlanta’s meeting rooms were all infused with dreams, grief, fear, and joy. To be human is to hold it all.

Studies suggest that about 95% of brain activity—and therefore behavior—is unconscious. That means many of our thoughts, choices, and actions are shaped by what we don’t even know is shaping us.

I am fascinated by the intersections of spirituality, consciousness, and action and as I have moved in and out of experiences and conversations as of late I find myself captivated by this: What might we create together if we moved from sleepwalking to awareness? If this is the world we've built in our sleep, imagine what’s possible when we are even a little more conscious.

Some say we suffer from a lack of imagination. But I wonder—do we lack imagination, or are we misusing it?

The energy used to justify oppression, to strategize systems of control, to feed ego-driven institutions—that’s imagination too. What if we repurposed that same energy toward justice, wholeness, and collective thriving?

At a time when “woke” is weaponized, staying awake is still sacred.

We sit in silence to hear.
We sit in solitude to become present.
We sit in stillness to learn how to move.

We live awake.

Grace + Ease,

Tia

A New Way to See the Good News

A new way to see the Good News offers a short passage that may offer a fresh perspective or insight into the ancient collection of poems, letters, and stories known as the Bible.

"I slept, but my heart was awake."

⎻ Song of Songs 5:2

A Breath Prayer

Pause. Take a moment. Find your breath. Close your eyes.

Inhale: Though I sleep...

Exhale: My heart stays awake.

News + New Good Things from Tia Norman “Do you bow your head when you pray or do you look up into that blue space? Take your choice, prayers fly from all directions. And don't worry about what language you use, God no doubt understands them all." -Mary Oliver (excerpt from Whistling Swans) Peaceful, Centered + Connected When I was first introduced to Centering Prayer, over a decade ago, one of the biggest obstacles I faced was finding 20 minutes to sit in quiet solitude. My home was full of...
